Picture yourself lounging in a hammock strung between two gumtrees. It’s a quiet day filled with warm Winter sun. There’s a few birds chirping in the background, but it’s drowned out by the soft rustling of leaves above. Now imagine this atmosphere melted down into a musical masterpiece. This is Halfway Home by Cormac Grant.

Released in April 2025, this record features the quintessential artistry of the local folk, rock musician. Over it’s 11 tracks, Cormac takes listeners on a journey of relaxation and nostalgia. His deep, husky vocals omit such a bright and cheery energy as they float alongside roaming guitars, reminiscent of a road trip from childhood.

A personal favourite from the album is the second track titled Threadbare. It’s upbeat tempo is classic folk, with elements of blue grass and old Western. Oh how I’ve been vouching for the return of old timey country in the Newcastle music scene, and by god has Cormac answered my wishes. He also touches on this theme in Cowboy Clouds, which I feel could only be made better with Bob Dylan-level harmonica and a slide guitar.

Another standout is Dreaming, a balmy love song that I can definitely see playing at a few weddings in the near future. As Cormac flicks between gritty low notes and buttery highs, the song just makes you want to start slow dancing with the closest person to you.

The album reminds me of Jack Johnson, Jack Davies and the Bush Chooks, and Nature TV. But, could also be considered similar to Adrianne Lenker, Mumford & Sons, and Sierra Ferrell.

All in all, anyone wanting to be transported to a realm of relaxation and comfort should give Hallway Home by Cormac Grant a thorough listen or two.
